Abstract
Purpose: We evaluated the incidence and clinical characteristics of post-traumatic osteoarthritis after surgery of acetabular fracture.

Materials and Methods: We studied 34 patients who underwent operation from 1996 to 2000 and were follow up for more than one year. The average age was 42.2 years. There were 29 males and 5 females. The average follow-up period was 21.5 months. We analysed the simple X-rays for fracture pattern and arthritis stage using Letournel criteria.

Results: Of the 34 patients, reduction was complete in 23 and incomplete in 11. Post-traumatic osteoarthritis occurred in 13 cases (38.2%), of which 5 (22%) were complete reduction and 8 (73%) were incomplete reduction (Ed-re double highlights: your percentages appear to be wrong). The incidence of post-traumatic osteoarthritis was most common after surgery of posterior wall fracture (5 cases, 38%) and then both column fracture (3 cases, 23%). Radiologic classification of post-traumatic osteoarthritis according to Letournel criteria was 2 in type ¥±, 3 in type ¥², 4 in type ¥³ and 4 in type ¥´ (Ed-re three highlights: these symbols have been corrupted on my Word version, so I couldn¡¯t check).

Conclusion: The causes of post-traumatic osteoarthritis of acetabular fracture are correlated with the severity of the injury and the reduction status at operation. Consequently, accurate anaylsis of fracture pattern and anatomical reduction at operation is essential.
